At home with Graen

by Stephanie Hannington-suen

Founded by Angela and Björgvin, Graen (from the Icelandic word for green) is an online store and creative studio that specialises in functional, design-led products for the art and practice of growing plants. We’re so excited to stock their beautifully designed seed packets which are now available on our online store.

We spoke to Angela and Björgvin of Graen Studios in their North London flat and talked to them about their inspirations, goals and how they balance home and work life.

Tell us a bit about yourselves, your background and what led you to start Graen

We both grew up with a strong connection to nature. It’s something that has always influenced us and when the idea for Graen came it made complete sense. It was a project we could channel our passion, knowledge and inspirations in to. Our backgrounds in the creative industry was a stepping stone, but is also at the heart of Graen. Nature and creativity are so intertwined we wanted to highlight this and celebrate all the artists, makers, writers and thinkers who have been inspired by its beauty.

Do you have any advice for anyone trying to start something of their own

Don’t be afraid to try, you’ll find that people are incredibly supportive if you approach them with the right attitude. Try not to compare what you’re doing to others, just be authentic to yourself and what you’re interested in.

The beauty of nature is at the forefront of your brand, what is it about it that inspires you?

Nature cannot be green and glossy all the time, part of experiencing its beauty is also accepting the slow moments, the death and decay. It’s the foundation of life and when we take moments to pause and observe it, it helps us to put perspective on our own existence. It’s an intrinsic part of being human to have a connection with nature and it’s very special to be able to bring this to people and into their homes.

What’s your favourite piece from your store?

The sculptural ceramic rainbow vases by Grace McCarthy because each piece is completely unique. I love the subtle shifts you can feel in the mood which is reflective of hers when she was making each one. We’re currently working together on a version exclusively for Graen.

How do you find balance in your daily life?

Every day is different and it’s not always easy to do. There are a few things we turn to such as taking a walk, reading, sketching, doing yoga or meditation, sitting in the sun or tending to our plants. Sometimes even just a good cup of tea can do the trick. Often the smallest, mundane tasks that take your thoughts away for a moment can help you to balance and reset.

What is your favourite homework scent and why?

The Woods essential oil blend is so refreshing and uplifting, it transports us to being back amongst nature so we always have it burning in the studio. I also love the Geranium soap, which is a very nostalgic scent for me, it takes me back to my childhood memories of the geranium filled greenhouse my parents had.
