Exploring Qi Gong: Embrace Balance and Wellness

by Stephanie Hannington-Suen

As we move deeper into the ‘Late Summer’ season, the influence of the Earth element is in full effect, representing stability, balance, and nurturing qualities that keep us grounded. In celebration of this, we recently hosted a community event—a restorative Qi Gong session in the park, led by Emma Tian Williamson.

Qi Gong, an ancient practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, combines slow, flowing movements with synchronised breathing to cultivate and harmonise vital energy, known as "Qi." For centuries, Qi Gong has been a cornerstone of holistic health, promoting overall well-being through a series of deliberate movements and postures designed to ensure the smooth flow of energy throughout the body.

Participants in Qi Gong can expect a range of benefits. Physically, the practice enhances flexibility, strength, and coordination, while supporting cardiovascular health and boosting the immune system. On a mental level, Qi Gong is renowned for its ability to alleviate stress and anxiety, foster relaxation, and enhance mental clarity. Its meditative nature also contributes to emotional balance and resilience, leaving practitioners feeling calm, present, and revitalised.

The connection between Qi Gong and the Earth element is particularly significant during the Late Summer season. This practice helps individuals achieve a sense of grounding and stability, making it especially valuable during transitional periods. Qi Gong not only supports personal well-being but also nurtures a sense of community and shared experience among participants.

Guided by mindfulness and yoga teacher Emma Tian Williamson, the Qi Gong session took place in Clissold Park, where attendees experienced movements and breathing exercises designed to align with the Earth element. This session offered a unique opportunity to connect with Qi Gong’s benefits while enjoying the serene outdoor setting.
