TCM Principles x Modern Recipes: Black Sesame with Jujube Porridge

by Stephanie Hannington-Suen

At Homework, we’re a modern ode to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and we believe many TCM principles can seamlessly fit into contemporary life. One of our favourite ways to do this is through home cooking, where we blend TCM wisdom with simple recipes and accessible, seasonal ingredients.

With the cooler weather, you may crave hearty, warming meals that stimulate circulation and provide comfort. This is the perfect time for slow-cooked, wholesome dishes that retain moisture and nourish deeply. Embrace the season with my favourite porridge recipe - a comforting, autumnal dish incorporating traditional chinese ingredients.

In this recipe, we’ll be using two powerful Chinese ingredients: Black Sesame powder and Jujube Dates. Both of which can be easily found at your local asian supermarket.

Black Sesame (Hei Zhi Ma) is neutral in nature, meaning it doesn't disrupt your body's Yin-Yang balance. It's sweet, which, according to TCM, helps detoxify the body and replenish Qi and Blood. It primarily benefits the Kidneys and Liver, supporting reproductive health, growth, and emotional balance.

Jujube Dates (Da Zao) are warm, helping restore balance in those who are more ‘cold’ in nature. Like Black Sesame, they are sweet and have a tonic effect on Qi and Blood. They support the Spleen and Stomach, aiding digestion and fluid metabolism.

INGREDIENTS (Serves 1)
3 tbsp porridge oats
1 tbsp black sesame powder
2–3 jujube dates (adjust sweetness to taste)
150ml milk
Handful of raspberries

METHOD
Chop the jujube dates into small cubes, carefully cutting around the seed.
In a pot, mix the porridge oats with black sesame powder.
Pour in the milk and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
Once boiling, reduce the heat and simmer until the porridge reaches your preferred consistency.
Top with raspberries and serve.

Enjoy this nourishing breakfast to start your day.
